Should Juventus Return to 4-3-3 to Accommodate Chiesa?

Federico Chiesa’s performance at Juventus has stimulated a pertinent question—should the Old Lady revert to a 4-3-3 formation to capitalise on his skills? The Italian international’s impact has been undeniable, but some believe he is being stifled in the current tactical setup. As we consider this proposition, we will explore the dynamics of the 4-3-3 formation, its potential advantages for Chiesa, and the wider implications for Juventus’ game strategy. Would this tactical shift unlock Chiesa’s full potential and, in turn, lead Juventus to greater success?

Federico Chiesa used to be a crucial player for Juventus when the team played Allegri’s favourite formation, the 4-3-3. So much so that during his absence due to a ligament injury, his offensive contribution was sorely missed.

When Chiesa returned from injury, big things were expected of him. However, Juventus’ weak defence forced Allegri to turn to the 3-5-2 system. To the dismay of Juve fans and the delight of opponents, that formation nullified any offensive threat Chiesa could pose.

So, Juventus and Allegri now have two options. Revert to the 4-3-3 formation to get the best out of Chiesa, or continue with 3-5-2 and sell their star. Both have their pros and cons.

If Juventus decides to sell the dynamic winger, the Old Lady will get so much money that it will feel like Allegri and co. went to the best online casinos in the UK and hit the jackpot. However, playing at casino sites is fun and enjoyable. Selling one of your best players is not, Juventus may soon regret its decision to offload the star.

So, let’s look at the other scenario – Allegri reverting to his preferred system—the 4-3-3. It will definitely benefit Chiesa, but let’s analyse what Juventus needs to do to make it happen.

Make Long Term Plans

Juventus coaches, and Allegri in particular, have a habit of playing a system not suited to their star players. Before Dybala was sold, he played for a long time in a formation that didn’t suit him. Now the same happens with Chiesa.

Therefore, it might be a good idea to build a team around one of the team’s best players. Instead of putting a system in place that makes the most out of the current squad, why not plan for the future and buy the players that would help Chiesa thrive? If the alternative is playing Chiesa as a wing back, it is a plan that certainly needs to be considered.

Buy a Quality Left Centre Back

If Allegri wants Juventus to play 4-3-3, he will need to buy a decent left centre back. Even though fullbacks are currently a problem for Juve, the main obstacle to playing the four-defenders system is the left-centre-back position. Bremer would do a good job as the right centre back, of course, but Allegri probably won’t pair him up with Danilo, as that duo could leak a lot of goals.

Juventus was said to be in the market for Pau Torres, a left centre back, a while back, but nothing came of that. However, if Allegri has any intention of playing 4-3-3, a left-footed centre back is a must.

Get Better Fullbacks

Juventus’ fullbacks currently include Mattia De Sciglio, Andrea Cambiaso, and Filip Kostić, who is being played out of position. Mind you, De Sciglio will just be coming back from injury, and Cambiaso didn’t set the world alight with his performances.

So, getting a couple of fullbacks is also a necessity if Allegri wants to play 4-3-3. Players like Timothy Castagne and Fabiano Parisi have been mentioned as targets for the right and left back positions, respectively, and they could be cheap and easy fixes to Juventus’ conundrum.
